Movie Review: Edge of Tomorrow

Last Thursday, June 5, 2014, I watched the movie Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt at Robinson's Place Lipa cinema. It was shown in 3D. It is an action slash semi sci-fi alien invasion type of film. For the most part I was not really amazed with the 3D effect, wherein i can feel that i actually am within the scene of the movie. Most of the parts that are in 3D are the main character and whatever is right in front of the camera (e.g. a rock, an extra character), the rest though are kinda flat. Kudos though because during the fight scenes at the beach, the little things flying here and there really made the 3D effect more enjoyable. I was startled at some part of that fight scene.

Aside from the 3D feature of the movie the plot adds something more to it. I quite enjoyed the twist of the plot and how they managed to get it going without getting boring.

NOTE: I have already spoiled parts of the movie. The following writings would give more spoilers so read further at your own risk.

The story started with Tom Cruise as a high ranking official in the U.S. Military at a time of war with alien invaders. He was then deported to be of service to the military as a soldier for battle. His background was an officer for advertising and encouraging people to join the army in combat not be in it. He has no prior training in combat or military when it happened. He woke up in camp where he was treated as a recruited soldier with his file saying that he would impersonate an officer and try to make a call to get out of camp. He first met Commander Farrel who then introduced him to the front line team for tomorrow's battle. The story went on with the battle prep the following day and Tom Cruise's hesitation for battle. Then came the beach battle wherein they were all slaughtered and killed but before dying Tom Cruise was able to kill a blue alien creature. Then when he died, he woke up from where he was just being recruited and the events happened over again. For some time he could not understand what was going on. Eventually, Emily Blunt upon talking to Tom cruise realizes what is happening to him and orders him to find her when he wakes up again in the cycle. From here on they started Tom's training in battle at the same repeating the cycle over and over. The reason behind this is when Tom killed that blue alien creature, the Alpha, he transferred its power on him. The Alpha is connected to the Omega, the heart or brain of the aliens, which starts the day and repeats the same day on the reset. This is triggered by Tom's death. The goal was to find Omega and destroy it, which will only happen when Tom has started the day plenty of times. So the events went on with the same day happening again. When Tom finally had a vision they set out a plan to reach Omega. However, surviving the battle at the beach posted to be a problem for them. Eventually, they found a way out of the beach but as their journey progressed it was revealed that Emily dies in an attempt to go further in reaching the Omega.

In another attempt Tom decided to go alone and destroy the Omega. When he reached the place where the visions showed him, he was surprised to find that it was just a trap. He ends up dying and another same day begins with a new tactical plan. Emily has a scientist doctor who works at the camp as a mechanic. He developed an equipment that could interfere with the signal of Alpha to Omega and reveal its true location. It took several attempts for them to get the device and find out where the Omega really is. After finding out, they set a course to Paris where the Omega was really hidden and took the front line team with them. It took a lot of lives and effort but eventually Tom was able to blow off the Omega. In the process, Tom was enveloped with the blue ooze from the Omega and woke up at the very beginning of the film. Everyone was alive, everything was in place, he was never sent to the army as a recruit, and the aliens are dead.

I know that is such a long summary but I tried my best to shorten it and give as little details as i possibly could. On to my review, I do hope my summary gave justice to what i was writing earlier of the amazing plot and twist. As everything goes on in the film, all the action and events that happens over again with little details that involves Tom's movements, we have to remember that he dies in every single day that it happens. So new events = one death. With everything that has happened he must've died a hundred times plus. That in itself to include in a story is just wow. Another thing to point out is, as the same day happens again they managed to create new events that made each same day significant. It also included an inception factor for me because not all day resets were shown with a new event, some were discovered through the dialogues of the characters. It can be seen in the amount of information Tom already knows in a given situation.

Furthermore on to the twist of the plot, is the false Omega location. At that point in the movie I genuinely thought that it was about to end and that the Omega is to be destroyed. Boy was I wrong. That added more to the story of the movie. It also gave more significance to other characters when they joined Tom and Emily in Paris. If you're asking how, I have to tell you to watch the movie because I do not want to spoil no further.

For the cinematics I really cannot give a proper review about because I am just starting to learn about new things in the world including that. However, I must point out that their setup in the film was admirable. The abandoned Germany and Paris albeit a small part was believable at least to me.

If you ask me all in all, I love this movie! It draws you in to the story and the action going on within the movie compliments it well. I highly recommend that you guys check it out.

Til my next post,
